Stone
Stanchions
Fieldstone and Native
Bluestone
Dry
stone construction of two matching stanchions clearly marks the entrance to one
of the wooded paths entering the grounds of the Black Feather Retreat Artists’
and Writers’ Colony located in Sullivan County, New York.
The
natural stone stanchions echo the many colonial stone walls found throughout
this region and, despite their modern construction, they appear to have been
built in the previous century. This
stone portal lets the traveler or hiker know that they are entering the
Retreat’s grounds. They are welcomed
yet aware that they are entering respected property.
These
required the gathering of about two pallets of stones and almost four days to
construct. The structures are three
feet wide at their bases and each is four feet tall. The approximate
cost for such a project is in the range of $ 1,400. - 2,800.
